Climate Change
Climate change is at the top of the social and political agenda today. The UK has increasingly demanding carbon reduction targets and energy efficient products will play a large part in reducing our emissions. Targets to cut carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 followed by 80% by 2050 mean that we need to make big changes in our energy consumption.
The Copenhagen Accord drafted in December 2009, stated the increase in global temperatures should be less than 2 degrees celsius, requiring countries to submit emission reduction targets by January 31st 2010, to be implemented immediately. In order to meet targets, businesses will have to develop corporate sustainability strategies to cope with these demands. Energy efficient lighting can contribute significantly towards achieving existing and future targets.
Some facts about energy efficient lighting:
Lighting our homes currently costs the UK £2.4 billion per year
Lighting accounts for 10-15% of our electricity bills
Replacing one million 50W halogen lamps with Totalight lamps would save 80,000 tonnes of C02
The International Energy Agency claims that a global switch to energy efficient lighting would cut the world's electricity bill by 10%
Global lighting emissions account for three times more than that of aviation
